What is a conflict of interest?
A conflict of interest exists when the financial, personal or professional interests of an author, reviewer or editor could influence, or appear to influence, the impartiality of their work and decisions.
For example: receiving financial support from an institution that benefits from the research results, owning shares in a related company, or a close personal relationship between the author and the reviewer.
Having a conflict of interest does not in itself mean the work is wrong, but disclosing it is necessary to protect transparency, impartiality and trust.
